NEXBRAND

The CI · Chapter 7

Fonts

A font is more than its name: which weights there are, what it is meant for and above all who may have its files. nexbrand keeps all of that.

The Fonts tab

Each font stands with a sample set in itself, its weights and a badge for its licence. Below come licence note, source and the files to download, where the licence allows it. Fonts from the catalogue carry ships with nexbrand. Under the fonts follow the type sizes.

Three ways to a font

  • Choose from nexbrand … and Add: nine free fonts under the SIL Open Font License that every browser shows without uploading: Fraunces, Playfair Display, Lora, Source Serif 4, Inter, DM Sans, Outfit, Space Grotesk and Nunito. Family and licence are fixed for them.
  • Upload a font: files as WOFF2, WOFF, OTF or TTF.
  • By name only: for a font whose files you do not have or may not keep.

In the editor each font has the fields Font family, For what, e.g. headings, Licence, Weights, e.g. 400, 700, italic, Fallback (sans-serif, serif, monospace or cursive) and Licence note. Add files and Remove file look after the files. A version holds at most twelve fonts, each with at most twelve files.

Three licences

LicenceMeans
Free, may be passed onThe files go along: on public pages, in the review, through the API.
In-house onlyThe house font. Only its name goes outside, never the file.
System fontRecorded by name only, such as a font the operating system brings.

Without a choice, In-house only applies. Uploaded fonts start that way too; you set them free only when the licence allows it.

The house font stays in the house

A file with the licence In-house only never leaves nexbrand: not through public pages, not in the review, not through a token or MCP, not as an example or a logo download either. That holds even when another version of the same client lists the same file as free, and it stays so when the version with the in-house licence is deleted. Whoever may pass such a file on uploads it again.

The checks remind you with a quiet hint: an in-house font appears outside by name only, and a system font needs a fallback because some devices lack it.

Pavo saysCommercial fonts are often licensed for the client's website only. When in doubt, record them by name only; that is enough for developers who license the font themselves.
